Holy Wednesday – What Is Happening in the Quiet?

Scripture grows quieter on this day. No major crowds. No dramatic moments. Just the weight of what’s coming—and decisions being made in the shadows.

Some call this “Spy Wednesday,” the day betrayal begins to take shape behind closed doors.

Not all spiritual battles are loud. Some of the most important moments happen in the quiet—where hearts drift, convictions weaken, and compromises are hidden.

What is forming in me when no one sees? What grows in secret will eventually be exposed and bear fruit. Am I conspiring against my God through quiet rebellion? Do I even recognize it?

Beautiful things happen in the quiet too. Jesus was quietly mustering his courage, his stamina, and his resolve to save us on this day. Much of his sacrifice would be predicated on his silence and refusal to speak up for himself. Yet his willing submission to a farse of a trial followed by unjust punishment and brutal death were the means by which he brings peace to our quiet moments. He brings stillness to our restless souls.

He comes to us in the quiet and calls us to leave behind the deeds of darkness and step out in the light with him. Because of Jesus, our shame is taken away and our sin atoned for. Because of him, the silence is now beautiful.

Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
