This question has frustrated and stumped so many people who consider the claims of the Bible about God's nature. They theorize that he can't be both because if God is all-powerful, he would use his power to stop all evil from happening in our world. Since he hasn't stopped all evil from happening despite having all power, then he can't be all good. Why would a good and powerful God allow things to be the way they are? He can't be both all good and all powerful, or so the argument goes.
But that line of thinking doesn't account for a few things.
First, who is the author of evil, God or us? We imply God must be evil if he allows evil, but if we rightly identify humanity as the source of evil in the world, then we can begin to understand why he doesn't just remove all evil immediately with his powerfulness. If he did, he would have to remove us all from the equation forever. So God could eliminate all evil once and for all today, but in the process, he would have to eliminate us!
Second, this line of reasoning doesn't account for the cross, the intersection of God's almighty power and his goodness. God took on human flesh in the person of Jesus Christ SO THAT he could live a perfect life in our place, stand against all the evil forces in the world, and willingly submit his life as an innocent sacrifice in our place. He allowed this to happen so that his goodness could pay for our evil. God's power to eliminate evil crushed his Son Jesus on the cross. His goodness compelled him to do that for us. At the same time, God was paying for all the evil that has ever been done and providing a way for sinners like us to be cleansed, forgiven, and remade perfect in His name and by His power.
God is all-powerful and all-good. This is why he came into our world to rescue us from our evil and calls us out of darkness into his wonderful light forever. And one day, all evil will be removed once and for all, and we will live in a new heaven and new earth filled with both God's power and goodness forever.
